On behalf of the conference organizing committee, it is my great pleasure to invite you to participate in and contribute to this symposium.  The scientific program will take place 5-9 October (with mid-symposium tour on 7 October); a post-symposium tour is planned for 10-12 October (venue: Istanbul or some other area in Türkiye: more specific information will be provided in the second symposium announcement).  The success of this eleventh international symposium is dependent, in part, on your assistance in sharing the information in this first announcement with all of your colleagues and friends.

Topics
The Symposium will cover research on annelid taxa (Clitellata, Hirudinea, and Aphanoneura).

LOCALITIES AND INFORMATION

Antalya is a city on the Mediterranean coast of southwestern Türkiye. The population of the city is 603,190 but reaches two million in summers at the height of tourism season. Situated on a cliff over the Mediterranean, Antalya is surrounded by mountains. The city of Antalya is situated by the Gulf of Antalya on the Mediterranean coast. The Taurus mountain range of southern Anatolia runs parallel to the Mediterranean in an east-west direction, resulting in the formation of narrow coastal plains, which are surrounded by mountains on three sides and open south to the Mediterranean Sea. On some parts of the coast, the mountains plunge sharply into the sea, forming small natural bays and peninsulas. Antalya is situated on a plain consisting of two flat areas formed of falez rock at a height of 35 m, where the mountains recede from the shore. Because this area of Turkey is protected from the cold northerly winds, it is characterized by the typical Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and moderately warm and rainy winters. Around 300 days of the year are sunny; the sea temperature never goes below 15°C, and increases to 29°C in the summer. The air temperature climbs up to 45°C in July and August. The sea breeze and the northeasterly winds blowing from inland areas relieve the area under this temperature.

Düden Falls Falls are a group of waterfalls in the city of Antalya, Türkiye. This waterfall, formed by the Düden River (one of the major rivers in southern Anatolia), is located 12 km north-east of Antalya ending where the clear waters of the Lower Düden Falls drop off a rocky cliff directly into the Mediterranean sea in a dazzling show.

Kurşunlu Waterfall is located 19 km from Antalya at the end of a 7 km road branching off to the north of the Antalya-Serik-Alanya highway, at a point 12 km from Antalya. The flow of water over this waterfall reduced to a mere trickle in the summer.

Saklıkent is a winter resort in Turkey, located 45 kilometers from Antalya and 60 kilometers from Antalya Airport. It is open for skiing from November to May. Because of its proximity to Antalya, one can ski, and within one hour be swimming in the Mediterranean Sea. Another Saklikent in the Antalya Region is the Saklikent Canyon, which is the second longest canyon in Europe.

Historical sites near the city of Antalya

Aspendos:
A Pamphylian city, 50 km (31 mi) from Antalya city on the Antalya-Alanya highway.

Termessos: A Pisidian city, 35 km (22 mi) northwest of Antalya; situated high on a mountain with remnants of an agora, theatre and an odion, it has a reputation of being the most magnificent necropolis on the Mediterranean.

Ariassos: 48 km (30 mi) along the Antalya-Burdur highway (before arriving at the village of Dag, turn left and Ariassos, then go 1 more km). A city of antiquity, Ariassos was built in a valley in clear view of its surroundings. The gate, the baths, the rock tombs and the mausoleum are almost intact.

Perge: 18 km (11 mi) northeast of Antalya. The ruins of Perge are spread on two hills -- the theatre on one and the acropolis on the other. According to legend, the city was built by three heroes from Troy.

Convener: Dr. Naime Arslan (Biology Department, Eskişehir Osmangazi University).
I look forward to receiving your questionnaire form and welcoming you to Antalya in October 2009.

Best wishes, Dr. Naime Arslan
